Septoplasty for Migraines

Relief for referred pain

Sinus surgery for contact-point headaches is successful in properly selected patients. At the Migraine Relief Center you will be evaluated for potential problems in the nasal cavity. Remember this is one of many potential reasons for migraines, amongst opthalmic, temporomandibular joint, cervical spine, vascular, tumors, and neurologic diseases.

Rhinologic headaches (coming from nasal cavity) are often characterized as referred pain. In other words the pain goes to other sites of the head when pressure occurs in the nasal cavity. It can be associated with allergic or infectious processes of the sinuses.

Our physicians will conduct a thorough history and physical examination.  Additional tests which may include Ct scans, MRI, or nasal endoscopy  may need to be performed. Treatment will then be determined based on findings. They can include medications to reduce swelling, clean up infections, up to sinus surgery for correction of the septum. If the septum is deviated (not straight) it can put pressure on tiny nerves.  A surgeon will typically straighten out the septum by removing some or all of the cartilage, otherwise known as a septoplasty.
