What is a sinus headache?

A sinus headache is one that occurs in the sinuses, which are located on the bridge of the nose, above the eyes, and on either side of the nose. These cavities produce mucus, and can become inflamed due to allergies or a sinus infection.
 

What are some symptoms of sinus headaches?

Sinus headaches cause pain in the sinuses, which is usually a consistent pain that is made worse by movement of the head, and can also be worsened by sitting or standing up. These headaches can also be accompanied by other sinus-related symptoms, including mucus discharge, clogged ears, swelling of the face around the sinuses, and possibly even a fever.

Sinus headaches typically require a visit to the doctor, as these types of headaches can indicate an infection or blockage of the sinuses. Less commonly, sinus headaches can be caused by a tumor in the sinuses, which will be indicated by an MRI and can be treated faster if medical attention is sought.
 

What are some treatment options for sinus headaches?

If it is found that sinus headaches have been caused by an infection, a doctor will prescribe antibiotics to clear up the sinus infection. Sinus headaches involve mucus production, and can be associated with allergies, so antihistamines may help relieve symptoms. However, a separate pain reliever will likely be necessary.

Pain relievers may help relieve sinus headache symptoms. Although some people use decongestants to treat sinus headaches, it’s advisable to consult a doctor before doing so. Some other types of headaches, including tension headaches and migraines, can be eased by the use of decongestants, but could need special attention not typical of sinus headaches. It is also important to note that decongestants can be habit-forming and should be avoided if other treatment options are effective.
