Medications Used to Treat Migraines

There are a number of drugs that play an effective role in treating migraines. These drugs fall into two major categories: preventive medications and pain relievers. Each of these have different uses, and they are each prescribed for different circumstances. Here is a list of some of the most common drugs.

Preventive Medications

If you have been suffering from headaches that are caused by stress, hormonal changes or any other triggering factor, then you need to treat them effectively before they take on the full form of migraines. Hereditary migraine is an exception for preventive treatment, but other factors can be kept in control. Otherwise, they would take the drastic form of migraines. Common forms of preventive medications are beta blockers, antidepressants, anticonvulsants and methysergide.

  • Propranolol

This is a common preventive drug that is administered for people suffering from blood pressure problems. The drug is also known as Inderal LA. It has been effectively treating migraines for over 30 years. It is a beta blocker that treats high blood pressure, heart conditions and migraine development. It blocks chemicals in the human body that trigger head and chest pain. The medication is taken under a prescribed dosage of usually two to three times per day. You should continue to take your medicine until your doctor says it is OK to stop. Propranolol could cost less than $25 per month.

  • Divalproex Sodium

People who could develop migraines because of seizure attacks should take divalproex sodium. This reduces the frequency and intensity of migraines. The drug’s brand name is Depakote, and it is a generic drug that is not very expensive. It is taken once or twice per day under strict medical supervision.

  • Lisinopril

This drug is known to effectively control blood pressure and prevent heart conditions. Because of its ability to prevent high blood pressure, it also controls hypertension, which in turn helps in preventing the outbreak of migraine.

Pain Relief Medications

For those suffering from painful migraines, here are drugs that you should know about.

  • Tramadol

Also known as Ultram, Tramadol is a powerful migraine pain reliever. Tramadol should be taken under very strict medical supervision as it could lead to dependency. This medication has a strong narcotic effect. Doctors usually prescribe this drug only when the pain strikes and is hard to control. It should not be taken on a daily basis. People should only take this medicine if they have one or two migraine attacks per month.

  • Vicoprofen

Generically known as ibuprofen or hydrocodone, it is an effective pain reliever that is not as strong as Tramadol. It is available over-the-counter. A typical Vicoprofen box costs $33 and contains 30 tablets. Patients take Vicoprofen two to three times per day.

  • Imitrex

Imitrex is meant for severe migraines. It is powerful enough to help people get rid of their migraines for a long period of time. It has mild side effects and costs around $15 per pill. Again, you should carefully follow your doctor’s instructions when taking this medicine.
